Molding Minds (Reading Rainbow Video Remix)

Juxtaposed movie samples provide a loose alternate interpretation for the very first episode of Reading Rainbow.

This is a primary segment of the episode, sharing a process of industrially manufacturing bowling balls. When I watched the original for the first time in thirty years, the words felt analogous to the modern process of filling fledgling minds with ideas. As each mind is molded, beyond information, style variations are minimized to a handful of useful or marketable categories. Modern education was designed for the assembly line and for war, then was supplemented by television PROGRAMMING… especially ‘educational’ kids’ shows like this one. Therefore, I thought perhaps this segment was explaining the point of the series, revealing the method within the content. Just a thought.

For details on these problems, PLEASE check out “The Underground History of American Education: An Intimate Investigation into the Prison of Modern Schooling,” by John Taylor Gatto. I did not find inspiration in the Reading Rainbow segment to provide anything on the solutions side here. For an entertaining discussion in the solutions spectrum, check out the movie “Accepted”. For detailed solutions, PLEASE check out the School Sucks Podcast.

This is educational commentary, provided via media juxtaposition, should qualify the fair use of these samples.
